Coming home for December: book local creators

The Piku teamUpdated   ·  4 min read

You booked the flights. Now the family wants photos, the wedding needs makeup for eight, your partner wants to see Cape Coast, and someone has to cook for thirty on Boxing Day. The best people for all of it live there, and their December fills up while you are still at work in London, Houston or Toronto.

This is how to book them from abroad, and pay them without worry.

In short
  • Book in November. The week from 24 December fills first.
  • Find creators through people you trust, then check their recent work.
  • Ask for a written quote with the date, hours, what is included and the price.
  • Pay a deposit by card from a link, and get a receipt each time.
  • Pay what is quoted. Tip for great work if you want to.

Who to book

The creators visitors book most in December:

  • Photographers and videographers: family and reunion shoots, a parent's birthday, an engagement, the wedding.
  • Makeup artists, hair stylists and braiders: wedding parties, concert nights, braids booked before you fly so they are done in your first week.
  • Tour guides and drivers: day trips, airport pickups, a driver who waits on a night out.
  • Chefs and caterers: Christmas lunch for the family, a private dinner at the villa, small chops for a party.
  • DJs and event hosts: a house party, the wedding, New Year's Eve.
  • Stylists and tailors: outfits for the season, often made to measure, so they need your measurements early.

If you plan your trip around events, our December 2026 calendar, city by city lists the dates in Accra, Lagos, Calabar, Cape Town, Nairobi and more.

How to find them

The best creators are often booked through people, not search:

  • Ask family and friends who were home last year. Ask what they paid, too.
  • Look at tagged posts, not only a creator's own feed. Real clients' photos show real work.
  • Check that the work is recent. A portfolio from three years ago tells you little.
  • Look for a page with prices. A creator who shows their rates and how to book is usually organised on the day too.

Get it in writing

A chat full of voice notes is not a booking. Before you pay anything, ask for a quote with:

  • The date, time and place, including the time they arrive.
  • What is included: hours, number of people or faces, number of edited photos, travel.
  • What is extra, such as early starts, more guests or rush delivery.
  • The total, the deposit and when the rest is due.
  • What happens if plans change: can the date move, and is the deposit returned?

Example quote: a family shoot on 27 December

ItemAmount
Family session, 2 hours, up to 15 people, peak dateUSD 250
Extra location, same dayUSD 50
Rush delivery, 10 photos in 48 hoursUSD 40
TotalUSD 340

Rest, on the dayUSD 170

Paying from abroad, safely

Paying across borders is where most December bookings go wrong. A few habits help:

  • Pay from a link, by card, where you can. It leaves a record on both sides.
  • Avoid sending money to a personal account for someone you have never met, with nothing in writing.
  • Get a receipt for every payment, the deposit and the rest. If anything goes wrong, it shows what you paid and for what.
  • Pay in the currency on the quote. If it is in local currency, your card converts it; check your card's fees first.
  • Do not pay everything months ahead for a large job. A deposit to hold the date, the rest closer to the day, is normal.

For creators reading this: visitors book whoever makes it easy. A page with your prices, a request button and a pay link they can use by card is most of the work. Our guides on how to make a rate card for any service, how to ask for a deposit before you start and pricing your work for December events cover each part.

In Piku, a creator's page shows their Rates. You tap Request, they send a quote, and you pay the deposit from the link by card, with no account. A receipt reaches your email after each payment, and the rest arrives as its own invoice.

Be a good client

December is hard work for the people who make it happen. A few things make you the client they want back:

  • Pay what is quoted. Haggling hard over a written December price rarely goes well.
  • Be on time, or tell them early. A makeup artist with six bookings cannot wait an hour.
  • Share the details early: guest numbers, addresses, the running order, dietary needs.
  • Tag them in your photos and leave a short review. It brings them next year's bookings.
  • Tip for great work, if it is normal where you are. It is never owed.

And book again next year, before anyone else does.

Questions

How early should I book creators for December?

As soon as your flights are booked, ideally in November. The best photographers, makeup artists, guides and chefs fill the week from 24 December to New Year first.

How do I pay a creator in Africa from abroad?

Ask for a quote and a pay link you can pay by card, and a receipt after each payment. Avoid sending money to a personal account with nothing in writing.

Is it normal to pay a deposit before I arrive?

Yes. Most creators ask for a deposit to hold a December date, often 50%. Ask what happens to it if your plans change, and get the answer in writing.

Why are December prices higher?

December is the busiest month, and many creators charge a written peak rate on the busiest dates. A fair one is stated up front, with the dates it covers.
